jmgtec.com – a reflection on John 16:33

…I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

John 16:33 – is one of my favorite passages. I can recall many times when I was younger, particularly when things did not work out well in a relationship or whatever it was I was trying to accomplish crashed and burned… I would turn to this verse for comfort. My focus was always on “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

One thing I have never noticed, at least not until today… are Jesus word’s… “That in me you may have peace…

There is no doubt that we all face tribulations while we live, internal, and external and they vary from person to person. Yet we have peace in Jesus, who has overcome the world… What does it mean though, that Jesus has overcome the world, and how does this bring me peace in Him?

Many times when the bible talks about the world, it is referring to the domain of Satan.

That may sound scary, but knowing the outcome is comforting, because we know that Jesus has defeated Satan, paid for our Sin, overcome death, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and desires us to be with Him.

Looking forward in Chapter 17, we get to hear what it is Jesus prayed for us and desires:

Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

So as we carry on with our day to day lives, each day with its various trials and hardships, remember that our best life is yet to come, when we see Jesus in all His glory.

In looking through my journal I found this. This was written in April of 2016. Little did I know that 2016 – 2017 would be really difficult times, and that this comfort I speak of would be needed very much. I hope that you find some comfort in this reflection.
